Verizon to drop unlimited data plan next month

Verizon Eliminates Unlimited Date Plans from July 2011

verizonVerizon, one of the leading data carrier in United States revealed yesterday that they would be removing their most popular unlimited data plan from next month and switch to a data usage based model.

AT&T did the same last summer and switched to a tiered system but AT&T didn’t cancelled the subscriptions of those who were already using the unlimited data plan, it seems as if Verizon is running on the path set by AT&T.

Their new data plans would be based on usage and users would have to pay:-

  • 2GB – $30/month
  • 5GB – $50/month
  • 10GB – $80/month
  • Tethering would cost $20/month and it would also include an additional 2GB of data.
  • Over usages are assessed at $10/GB.

As of now nothing much has been said about keeping current unlimited data plans active by Verizon, it is possible that they might not disconnect their wide range of users in United States who are currently subscribed to Verizon’s unlimited data plans.

  1. My work required that I move to a smart phone and the only offerings from Verizon at the time were more expensive than the iPhone. Add to that their network design that does not support simultaneous voice and data usage and I couldn’t justify staying with Verizon.
