How to backup your data when your windows crashed??

It happens to me,i have some blue screen error on my Desktop PC and my windows is not loading.I tried detaching and attaching my hard disks and RAM but still the same blue screen.

OMG..My PC has my collection of over 250GBs of games and movie..!!What do i do??

Just follow easy steps to backup recover your data.

[1] Here we will use Ubuntu Live CD to backup recover our data.

If you have another system or ask your friend to download and burn Ubuntu Live CD You can use A small application called ImgBurn for easy burning process.

[2] Now that you have Ubuntu CD,boot your computer from this Ubuntu Live CD.(Put your CD in the CD/DVD drive and restart your computer.

[3]After taking some initial loading time ,you should see an option to “Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer”.Select this option and Hit enter

Ubuntu screen

[4]Once the computer starts Choose places then Computer from top Menu and you could see your drives.

[5] Try to open your C drives,if it immediately opens then good for you.

Else you will get an error message “Unable to mount the volume”.Click on the Detail option to see expanded alert message .

Do not close this window (Make a note of the Underlining errors ,we will be needing shortly)

Note underlining text

In such case you have to mount your C drive.

[6] Mount drives

From the top menu open the new terminal (Applications \ Accessories \ Terminal on the top menu)

Terminal is something like a notepad in which you write commands and Ubuntu executes them ,think terminal as a command prompt for windows.

You have to write and execute following commands one after the another.(write commands and hit enter to execute)

sudo /bin/bash [to switch to “administrator” mode]

mkdir /media/disk [to create a directory that we’ll mount the drive on]

Now comes the tricky part. You’ll need to type out a command very similar to this one, but you’ll need to replace /dev/sda1 with what you see in that message box we showed you above. This command tells Ubuntu to use the ntfs-3g driver, and force mount even if there is a problem.

mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /media/disk -o force

If your drive is FAT32 instead of NTFS, then you can use the following command instead:

mount -t vfat -o umask=000 /dev/sda1 /media/disk

[7] Finally at this point you would be able to open your drives. You have to do this for every Drive For C: D: E: …..

[8] Backup Your data with external USB flash Drive

To plug in an external USB drive, which should place an icon on the Ubuntu desktop, and most likely immediately pop up a nautilus window showing the contents of the drive.

Now we download stuff almost daily. New products pop out so often. You can use any software forever you want. You can download trial version, right. Trial version expires after some days. You can stop that expiration. You can tell trial version of the software to not count days or do not bother about time. The software will stay and keep working like original software forever and will not expire or cease to work. You do not have to change your system clock. This little software does it all.

Time Stopper : use Trial Version software forever without Expiration

Time Stopper is the software which can stop the time for try out version software. When you stop the time you can use your try-out versions forever. When you stop the time of a try-out version using this Time Stopper it works via this Time Stopper. Real time and date run normally on your system. You can use any number of try-out version softwares with this software.

How it Works

Open Time Stopper

Browse and select .exe of required trial software

Choose the new date (Any date which occurs in between your trial software time period before expiration, suggestion: set it to two days before trial software expiration date.)

Choose any time

Click open software on your selected date

If you wish to create an icon for your modified trial software and do not want to open Time stopper every time then use last button in software to create new icon. open that trial software after that from that newly created icon always otherwise it can expire.

Size: 844 KB

Download Time Stopper

In windows XP, you would most probably use DVD/CD burning software such as Nero or DeepBurner to make iso images, and software like alcohol 120% or daemon tools to mount the images.

In linux, you can use the commandline to both make and mount iso images.

Firstly, the program ‘dd’ which comes standard on any linux distro can be used to make an iso image.

the program syntax is relatively simple, here is an example that would make an iso image of my cdrom0 drive and save it in my home folder as backup_image.iso:

dd if=/dev/cdrom0 of=~/backup.iso

now to explain the command,

the first bit “dd” is the program name (note: dd stands for dataset definition, not data dump as it is mistakenly known as).

the next part of the command “if=/dev/cdrom0″ specifies the input for the program, in this case it is the device cdrom0 (my first CD/DVD drive)

the last bit of the command “of=~backup.iso” specifies the output path and name for the program, in this case the output is a file named backup.iso that is stored in my home directory. the tilde (~) specifies the home directory.

so there you go, a relatively simple method of creating an iso file in linux. You can even put this in a bash script and have the iso file tarballed and gziped and sent off to your file server for archiving, but thats for another article to cover.

the command dd has many more options than what I have shown such as the ability to select block size and write at a certian number of bytes at a time, all these options grant dd great flexibility. Infact, you could use dd to backup entire harddrives and make 1:1 copies of their filesystems. Even damaged drives can be recovered somewhat using dd as it is low-level and works with the raw data on the drive.

Now that you know how to make iso images using dd, you will want to know how to mount them. In linux this is easily achieved using the ‘mount’ command. The first thing you will want to do however, is to create a mount point for your iso image, so as root go ahead and create a directory named iso in /mnt. try using this command if your distro supports sudo -

sudo mkdir /mnt/iso

this creates a directory named iso in your /mnt directory , we will use this directory as a mount point for out iso image.

now mount the image -

sudo mount -o loop ~backup.iso /mnt/iso

this command mounts the backup.iso file found in your home directory to the mount point /mnt/iso the -o loop part of the command allows the iso file to be treated as a block device.

now that you have mounted the iso, go to your /mnt/iso directory and you should see that the iso contents are readable and usable.

to unmount the iso image, type in this command :

umount ~backup.iso

Linux is not Ubuntu or Fedora or Suse

Most people look at Distros like Ubuntu and Fedora and Slackware and call them “Linux”. When these distros boot up and get into a GUI environment, people call the GUI linux as well.

But…..That is not true!

Linux is actually just the kernel. The Linux kernel talks to the hardware in your computer and gets it to perform tasks based on your instructions, which are passed to the kernel via the command interpreter, also known as the “shell” or via applications that talk directly to the kernel. The kernel handles things like memory allocations, I/O operations, device management, file management and process management. It is in essence, the heart of the operating system.

So now that we have established that linux actually refers to the kernel, what are all the other things on your Distro? what handles the GUI? where are the panels and menus from? what gives you the cool desktop effects? The answer is that they are all seperate programs and on most linux distributions, these programs are all free and open-source meaning that everybody who understands programming can simply download the programming code and modify the program to suit their needs. So when you boot up your distro and look at the user interface, it is actually a piece of free software that has been worked on and improved by volunteers worldwide.

Now, because all the pieces used to build a linux distribution are all seperate programs and not hard coded into the kernel, this means that you can swap them around as you see fit. Getting tired of your usual graphical environment? you can remove it and add a different one, like KDE or fluxbox. You can even have 2 or 3 graphical environments installed and choose which one to use when you log in.

This modularity is what makes linux so flexible. You have ultimate control as to what sofware you want on your computer, and that is one of the many reasons why I love it

In my next post i will explain about the linux file system, stay tuned.

Task manager is a powerful Windows tool for managing system services, processes, monitoring system activity and starting or closing applications. It is basically extended version of run box and it comes very handy to operate within Windows system. That’s way many system administrators prefer to disable task manager on public computers to restrict access to major critical system resources which could lead to system compromise. Here we will show you how to modify registry to disable and re-enable Windows task manager.

Goto start and click on run(Win+r) and type in regedit and find this input

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System.

If you do not see “System” folder under Policies you can create it by right mouse click on Policies > Key > and name it System. Than point your mouse pointer to an empty area, right click it and choose create new DWORD (32 bit) value. Name it DisableTaskMgr and press enter. Than double click it and set Hexadecimal value to 1. Press enter and reboot computer. After than task manager will be disabled on your machine and inaccessible. If you later decide to enable task manager again, navigate once against to dword 32 value we just created and simply delete it or change value to 0. Navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

If there’s no key called “System” right click Policies navigate to “New -> Key” in the right click menu and type “System” to create a new key.(skip this step if you have the key) To disable task manager right click the empty area in the right side pane and create a key with the following settings “New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value” and type “DisableTaskMgr” and press Enter.(without the quotes) Right click on “DisableTaskMgr” and click “Modify”, type 1 and press ok(see screen caps for more info) to enable task manager simply navigate to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

right click “DisableTaskMgr” click delete and click yes for confirmation.

Due to the nature of my work with computers I reinstall operating system so often that there is no point in activating it with Microsoft center. Instead I rather use a command line tool to reset registry time counter in my operating system which gives me additional 30 days of fully functional operating system and since Windows allows to use this hack up to 3 times this gives me altogether 120 days.
To extend Windows trial period open cmd and type in “slmgr –rearm”. Wait a few seconds and see the result.Than use the same hack after 29 days and do it twice more. This way you will be able to use operating system without activating it for a full one third of a year.

Gmail has introduced its latest Labs feature called offline Gmail to enable e-mail access even when you are not connected to the Internet.

While this might sound uber geeky, the concept is simple enough when you actually use it. Oh, and the “offline” mode is already available in a simpler form if you happen to use Outlook or any other email client with Gmail POP access.

Gmail uses its Google Gears open source web application to enable the “offline” mode. Currently, Google lists Firefox 2, 3, and the Internet Explorer 7 in its list of supported browsers. Strangely, there is no mention of Google’s own, the Chrome! However, it might be because Chrome support is obvious.

What it does

The feature, which needs to be enabled from under the “Labs” option under “Settings,” downloads e-mails onto your computer and allows access even when there is no Internet connectivity. Users will be able to access most of their emails, reply to them, and view starred and unread messages, just like they do when Gmail is online. When you perform an action that needs web access, Gmail will queue the action and will execute it as soon the connection is restored. While it might not sound very exciting initially, I, for once, can realize how useful this might turn out to be. For many users, Gmail has become a data center, and I suspect that there are many people out there who would want to have a look at their mails and archives even when not connected to the Internet. The best thing is that once this feature is installed, Gmail will be able to go offline or online by detecting the network status, so you do not need to switch on/off the Offline mode manually. There is also this “Flaky Connection Mode” that detects a slow connection and uses the local cache for accessing data, and only uses the server when Gmail needs web access – like when hitting the send button.

Not all Gmail features work, though, in the offline mode. What does work, however, are the sending and replying to emails, searching your archives, and the much-needed auto-complete function. You will not be able to add attachments or add/manage contacts. However, most users will be able to live with such minor inconveniences.

Issues

As expected of a Labs feature, this application has been tested internally amongst 20,000 Google employees and has then been made available to the Labs. Not all users may see this enabled in their accounts, but the feature should be available to all in the coming days. As for the issues noticed, I have not seen anything go wrong in the little time that I have used this. However, CNET does report issues of the local cache going out of sync, but most issues can be sorted out by disabling and re-enabling the feature.

logo1_.exe is a Trojan which allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system.

I’m not sure about the above claim but, any process consuming the system resources uselessly is annoying. My antivirus (AVG) detects this virus but doesn’t clean it completely. I tried deleting it manually but it was coming back again. When i was tired of removing this virus I got this idea and it worked like a charm. We are going to replace the Logo1_.exe file with another harmless executable file and set its permissions to read only. Now the virus wont be back again.

Here is what you exactly do to remove the Logo1_.exe virus:

open task manager and look for the process logo1_ and terminate it

now go to c:/windows and delete logo1_.exe file

create a copy of any exe file ( I used TASKMAN ) and rename it to Logo1_

change its permissions to read only.
