Gmail has introduced its latest Labs feature called offline Gmail to enable e-mail access even when you are not connected to the Internet.

While this might sound uber geeky, the concept is simple enough when you actually use it. Oh, and the “offline” mode is already available in a simpler form if you happen to use Outlook or any other email client with Gmail POP access.

Gmail uses its Google Gears open source web application to enable the “offline” mode. Currently, Google lists Firefox 2, 3, and the Internet Explorer 7 in its list of supported browsers. Strangely, there is no mention of Google’s own, the Chrome! However, it might be because Chrome support is obvious.

What it does

The feature, which needs to be enabled from under the “Labs” option under “Settings,” downloads e-mails onto your computer and allows access even when there is no Internet connectivity. Users will be able to access most of their emails, reply to them, and view starred and unread messages, just like they do when Gmail is online. When you perform an action that needs web access, Gmail will queue the action and will execute it as soon the connection is restored. While it might not sound very exciting initially, I, for once, can realize how useful this might turn out to be. For many users, Gmail has become a data center, and I suspect that there are many people out there who would want to have a look at their mails and archives even when not connected to the Internet. The best thing is that once this feature is installed, Gmail will be able to go offline or online by detecting the network status, so you do not need to switch on/off the Offline mode manually. There is also this “Flaky Connection Mode” that detects a slow connection and uses the local cache for accessing data, and only uses the server when Gmail needs web access – like when hitting the send button.

Not all Gmail features work, though, in the offline mode. What does work, however, are the sending and replying to emails, searching your archives, and the much-needed auto-complete function. You will not be able to add attachments or add/manage contacts. However, most users will be able to live with such minor inconveniences.

Issues

As expected of a Labs feature, this application has been tested internally amongst 20,000 Google employees and has then been made available to the Labs. Not all users may see this enabled in their accounts, but the feature should be available to all in the coming days. As for the issues noticed, I have not seen anything go wrong in the little time that I have used this. However, CNET does report issues of the local cache going out of sync, but most issues can be sorted out by disabling and re-enabling the feature.

Grrrrrrrr……I yelled out because the data being transferred to my computer from the DVD was interrupted due to an error stating”Cyclic Data redundancy…” which means that the DVD/CD writer isn’t able to read the DVD due to bad sectors formed generally due to scratches .Just before this error had popped,3GB of my DVD was already copied,Left over was another 1.7 GB.

The 3 GB I copied disappeared.If only Windows would leave at least the 3GB of what was copied.Everything disappeared because of some small scratches.I had a backup of my most important personal videos in it.I had just reformatted my hard drive.I wish windows would skip the errors and read rest of the DVD/CD so that the error sectors would be skipped and the rest could be read..I had to find a solution.I tried everything possible but couldn’t retrieve the data.Finally as I had hope and the will not to give up I found this minute tool with which I recovered almost all of my data.

Note:While copying data from a DVD/CD there might be an error occurrence because the DVD/CD has scratches.Assume this error to occur when 50% of a file has been copied,as this error has occurred even the 50% of the file copied will be deleted by windows.This doesn’t happen in the case of the tool I am going to tell about.

Now Everyone must have faced similar cases while copying data within the computer from 1 sector to another or while transferring data from your DVD/CD to your computer.It might not be the same like mine but it will be similar.You were probably transferring a huge file from your DVD to computer where the estimated time was 20 min and you had to leave urgently for some meeting or anything similar.Probably your power supply went off while transferring file to computer and you had no other option than to turn of your computer while transferring an important file.At the end of all this you wished windows would allow pause and resume of file transfer within the computer.

Now,you wishing for windows performing all these functions is a waste of time as it isn’t going to do this lately.There is a solution for everything.Windows might not help you out but I am always there says this Software called Total Copy.

Why would you want to download this software?

1.It supports Pausing and Resuming of Files within the3 computer.(I don’t refer to files being downloaded from the internet.It is only transfer of files to/within the computer)You can pause the file transfer from your DVD/CD and continue it next time you start your computer.

2.If there is an error in the DVD/CD you can choose an option to skip the errors and copy rest of the DVD/CD.

3.You can choose the transfer speed.For scratched Disc’s low transfer speed should be selected for better reading.

4.It is faster than the windows copy utility.

After installing test it by right clicking on any file and dragging it to required folder.

When I right click and drag it to required folder this is what appears:

Choose the option “Total copy here” and the file will be copied there.

A useful tip by Abhinav

Suppose you are copying a video file of about 500 Mb, then instead of copying it on your desktop straight, you create a briefcase and then start copying into that briefcase. Now even if there is a power cut or a problem in the CD, the part copied in the briefcase will be retained and will not vanish.

Copying to brief case has only one advantage, this doesnt give you other options line pause and resume, speed and skipping errors.

Have copied many corrupted CD’s before on my system.

When one of my friends told this, I didn t take it very seriously. Because, what he told was not happening for me. What he told was  Hey G, whenever I come to your profile, a alert box appears with the name askoppal. Do you know who it is

Well, askoppal is my friend and is in my friends list, but nothing of that sort happened, because I was using opera then and scripts were blocked. But the interesting happened today morning when I used firefox, yes a alert box was indeed appearing when I visited my profile.

Primary Investigations showed me that there wasn t anything in the source that could be causing this. Then I went to askoppal s profile page and found that his profile name was
alert( askoppal )

and hence an alert box was appearing even in his profile page. But why in mine?

So what I did was I changed my title to a similar one.

And then I observed that even my name too was displayed in the alert box, but two times it appeared and then askoppal s name.

Now the question was, is there any possibility of compromising your account using this bug. If yes, has anyone already started exploiting this bug? I posted my thoughts at Hacker s Library. And Vipul responded back in my scrapbook. (I don t think I can recreate the conversation here as he keeps his scrap book empty.L.) Anyway let me see.

You can successfully make an XSS attack using the TypeRacer app s bug.

How about a link to an external script.
Actually name field has limited letters, so you can simply so is we can connect it via external scripts. But still, it s not good to have such a flaw!

The basic of XSS is if you re able to execute scripts on a remote machine using a bug from a live site.
We can just publish that malicious scripts can be executed in orkut can cause a  Man in Middle attack.

How are we able to execute script?
In what ways, one way is by typing in the First Name – Last name fields.

It s just working with profile name, nothing else.
Actually the profile name flashes in the TypeRacer app, that s why!

Then I tried using document.cookie in the script (javascript:alert( document.cookie ) when executed in your address bar displays the cookies set.) But the outcome was a blank alert box. This means that document.cookie did not carry any value. It was null, when executed via TypeRacer app.

How about the spammers?
They can make fake accounts and add themselves in typeracer and then they put the redirection script to advertisement sites and can gain profits. A script hosted on a different server which contains the bunch of those click fraud URLs.

Then after some profile surfing, I found that it was irritating at times to have a bunch of alerts, in profile having TypeRacer app. It seems that JavaApplet can be executed via similar scripting. In a community discussion, I found the code which claimed to be  a orkut trojan

What this code does shall be discussed later. It basically mails your cookies and transfers your communities. But using latest firefox and ie7 avoids session and cookie hijacks and for transferring communities, the password is now required. So there isn t any possibility of account and community hijack. Only some irritating scripts might run. Well, use firefox with NoScript addon installed, to avoid all problems.

Best Solution : Remove TypeRacer App at least till the problem is resolved by the brains behind the application. And do use Firefox with NoScript addon

A lot of users use internet schemes with restrictions on the bandwidth consumption. Firefox re downloads all the heavy files even if they are in the cache ( Even if the cache size setup way too high ), this will considerably increase your bandwidth consumption. It’s very annoying to download the files again if you already have them in cache. Re-downloading the files that are already in cache will considerably decrease your browsing speed.

A very good way to save the bandwidth is to install Firefox Plugin called BetterCache
Open this page and click on install the Plugin. Restart Firefox then click on tools > add-ons. Click on the options for betterCache Plugin. Check the radio button next to never, under check pages for actuality. This way Firefox will avoid looking for new versions of the pages or elements.
