4 Security Tips to Make Your Wireless Network Secure

We have various means of connecting to the internet nowadays, some of us connect to the internet via a fiber optic network, some of us connect to the internet via a DSL broadband modem, some of us connect to the internet through our mobile phones and 3G networks and some of us connect to the internet through a wireless internet.

Even though most of these internet connections are very fast and make a lot of things possible a lot of us neglect the security aspect of our computers and internet connection. When it comes to wireless internet security there are two parties that come to play, the first is the wireless network and the second is your computer. This post will be giving you some tips on how to successfully connect to the internet via a wireless network without your security being compromised.

Limit or Disable SSID Broadcast

If you’re a network administrator or the owner of a wireless network the first thing you have to do is control how your wireless network broadcasts. Even though there are a lot of hacking techniques, tools and a lot of powerful hackers the reality is that they can’t hack your wireless network if they can’t access it and there is no way they can access your wireless network without discovering it.

The first step to wireless network security is disabling or restricting your network broadcast. For example, if you’re a café owner or you own a coffee shop the best thing to do will be to restrict your network broadcasting to inside of your shop only but if you connect wirelessly from home the best thing to do will be to disable the network broadcast.

Update Your Antivirus, Software and Hardware

Another important thing you should do when trying to make sure you’re protected from hackers is to make sure your antivirus is always updated and that you’re not using any outdated software or hardware. For example, there have been a lot of occasions when my computer has been infected by a virus just from visiting another site, but everything stopped when I started updating my antivirus regularly.

Another important thing to do is update your computer hardware regularly because hackers are always informed and they will always have ways to exploit outdated computer components. If you’re using an outdated wireless modem or an outdated network card it will be a great decision to get the latest version of your hardware in order to ensure your security.

Use a Firewall

A firewall is a system designed to block unauthorized programs from accessing your computer and network, both from the internet or external devices. A lot of hackers try to take over your computer by installing software on your computer but there is no how this software will take over your computer when you have a solid firewall. You should also make sure you don’t just authorize any software unless you trust it.

Always Use HTTPS When Necessary

Another important thing that can help increase your wireless security especially if you’re accessing the internet with an insecure network is the use of HTTPS. HTTPS is a strong encryption technique that protects your data and prevents other computers and software from getting your details. For example, when trying to access your email address, your facebook account, your twitter account and some other important online accounts make sure you access it using HTTPS. A great way to do this is by adding an “s” after the “http” before the website address you’re trying to visit e.g. Instead of typing http://facebook.com it will be https://facebook.com.

Conclusion

One of the most important elements to consider when trying accessing the internet is the speed of your internet connection but another thing is even more important than speed, and that is your online security. The above are 4 great ways to make your wireless network more secure.
